It’s painful to think students joined in, or orchestrated, the burning of books. Students should be the least conformist, most willing to think, portions of the population.

My first thought when I read the headline…Helen Keller is still alive!?

Helen Keller was deaf & blind, and yet SHE managed to know what they were doing to the Jews in Germany. Kinda says something about all the GERMANS who insisted they “didn’t know!”.

I wasn’t alive at the time she wrote this letter, would never burn a book, yet even I feel chastized by the words.

Hell hath no fury … .

Non-conformity in Germany at that time had dire consequences, and usually resulted in the person no longer being a student. If you wanted higher education, you parroted the Nazi party line and open dissent got you sent to a concentration camp, at a minimum.

I wouldn’t burn books, but I have thrown some books in the garbage. (for example, I threw some books by Ann Coulter in the recycle bin)
